Mississippi State University’s Maroon Band Shines with Talent and Discipline
Members of the Famous Maroon Band at Mississippi State University (MSU) are demonstrating that musical talent often goes hand-in-hand with academic excellence. This year, the band, which includes over 425 members, has recorded impressive academic statistics: a median ACT score of 27 and a median GPA of 3.6. Notably, 160 students achieved an ACT score of 30 or higher, with nearly 40 members maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA.
According to Elva Kaye Lance, the long-serving Director of Bands, there is a significant correlation between the discipline required for musical success and academic achievement. “Participation in a college marching band offers students shared experiences with a wide range of peers who share a common passion,” she stated. “Beyond musical performance, the band experience helps shape students into well-rounded individuals, fostering valuable life skills and a strong sense of community.”
Upcoming Performances Highlight Band’s Talent
The Famous Maroon Band is set to kick off its season with a series of performances at MSU football games, themed “FMB Brings the Heat.” The repertoire will include popular tracks like “Heat of the Moment” and “The Heat is On.” On September 6, 2024, the band will host its annual high school band day, welcoming approximately 300 high school students to perform alongside them.
As the season progresses, the band will showcase a variety of themes, including cartoon music during the SEC opener on September 27, 2024, and Latin Jazz pieces such as Chick Corea’s “Spain” and Stan Kenton’s “La Suerte de los Tontos” during the Egg Bowl in November 2024.
Retention rates among returning band members are strong, reflecting the welcoming environment fostered by the program. Lance emphasized that this positive trend, combined with the efforts of university recruiters to attract new students, has contributed to the ongoing success of the band program. “We feel truly fortunate to work with such talented musicians and dedicated young professionals from across our campus,” she added.
Expanding Horizons Through Performance
In addition to regular appearances at football and basketball games, the Famous Maroon Band has participated in high-profile events such as the Reliaquest Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Gator Bowl, and the Orange Bowl. The Wind Ensemble has also performed internationally in countries including Austria, Germany, Italy, and most recently Spain this past spring. Furthermore, the Wind Ensemble showcased its talent at prestigious events such as the 2020 American Bandmasters Association Convention in Biloxi and is scheduled to perform at the 2024 Mississippi Bandmasters State Band Clinic in Natchez.
The Famous Maroon Band exemplifies how music and academics can intertwine to create a rich, fulfilling experience for students. As the season unfolds, MSU’s band continues to inspire both its members and the community at large. For more information about the Famous Maroon Band, visit www.msuband.msstate.edu.
