James Gunn Addresses The Flash and Wonder Woman’s DCU Status

In a recent episode of the Peacemaker podcast, director James Gunn provided insights into the potential roles of The Flash and Wonder Woman within the new DC Universe (DCU). He hinted at their future appearances while discussing their current status in the series. This marks the first official commentary from Gunn regarding the timeline and relevance of these iconic characters in the DCU following the franchise’s reboot.
Gunn’s Reflections on Canon Status
During the podcast, co-host Steve Agee pointed out that children in a classroom scene from Season 1 mention both The Flash and Wonder Woman. Gunn responded with uncertainty about their canonical status: “Yeah, are they canon? I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see. I mean, they’ll exist eventually. Whether they exist now, I don’t know.” This statement highlights the evolving landscape of the DCU and the characters’ integration into the narrative.
Previously, Gunn indicated that a cameo by Ezra Miller as The Flash in the Season 1 finale of Peacemaker would not be part of the DCU canon. The Flash’s last film, released in 2023, was positioned as the final installment before the DCU took a new direction. The DCU has already hinted at a new speedster, notably through a mural of Max Mercury in the upcoming Superman film.
Future Appearances and Projects
In earlier statements, Gunn confirmed that neither The Flash nor Aquaman would appear in the DCU for at least two years. This timeframe is intended to create a clear distinction between their portrayals in the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and their upcoming appearances in the DCU. Regarding Wonder Woman, Gunn’s remarks imply that while she will be included in the new universe, her portrayal may differ from that of the DCEU’s long-standing interpretation of the character. A new Wonder Woman project is currently in development under the leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.
Additionally, a rumor from industry insider @MyTimeToShineH suggests that the Justice League cameo in the first season of Peacemaker will be replaced in Season 2 with the Justice Gang, first introduced in the upcoming Superman film set for release in 2025. The reshot version will reportedly feature characters such as Mister Terrific, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl, with only the latter two being fully visible in the scene.
Season 2 of Peacemaker is set to premiere on August 21, 2025, on HBO Max, with returning cast members including John Cena, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Danielle Brooks. As the DCU continues to evolve, fans will be keenly watching for updates on these beloved characters.
This comprehensive overview of Gunn’s comments reflects the shifting dynamics within the DCU and offers a glimpse into the future of these iconic superheroes, as the franchise aims to redefine its narrative landscape.
