Suffolk County Offers Tax Breaks to NYC Firms If Mamdani Wins

Suffolk County has announced plans to entice New York City businesses to relocate if Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor. County Executive Ed Romaine revealed the initiative during an interview on WABC 770 AM’s “Cats Roundtable” show on Sunday, emphasizing the potential for tax breaks as a significant incentive for companies considering a move.

Romaine stated, “If Mr. Mamdani wins, I’m going to encourage many of the corporations that do business in New York City [to] come to Suffolk,” which is approximately 70 miles east of the city. He affirmed that these companies would benefit from tax reductions, suggesting that they would “do better” in Suffolk than in the city. This initiative comes as Florida officials actively recruit New York-based CEOs to relocate to the Sunshine State, where many former New Yorkers have settled.

While expressing his support for the tax incentive strategy, Romaine voiced skepticism about Mamdani’s qualifications to lead New York City. He questioned Mamdani’s experience, particularly regarding the candidate’s proposed initiatives which include a free bus fare program. Romaine remarked that the plan “sounds great,” but raised concerns about the financial implications, stating, “someone has to pay for it.”

Mamdani’s campaign proposes raising $9 billion in taxes on billionaires and corporations to fund various social programs, including free bus fares, expanded free childcare, and more affordable housing. Romaine cautioned that New York taxpayers, burdened by high living costs and taxes, may resist additional financial demands.

In response to Romaine’s comments, Dora Pekec, Mamdani’s campaign spokeswoman, issued a statement emphasizing the challenges faced by working-class citizens in New York City. She attributed the struggles to what she described as “corrupt politicians” such as former Governor Andrew Cuomo and current Mayor Eric Adams. Pekec highlighted Mamdani’s commitment to making the city affordable, asserting that he aims to create a quality of life that attracts workers and businesses.

As the election approaches in November, the debate over the future of New York City’s economy and the viability of Mamdani’s proposals intensifies. Suffolk County’s offer may shape the conversation as businesses weigh their options in a rapidly changing economic landscape.
