Trump Sets Urgent 12-Day Deadline for Russia on Ukraine Ceasefire

President Donald Trump has announced a new deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine, reducing the timeframe to 10 to 12 days from Monday. This decision comes amid intensified discussions about potential sanctions against Moscow if it does not comply. Previously, Trump had given Vladimir Putin a 50-day window to reach an agreement. He has emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing the loss of life in the ongoing conflict.
During remarks made alongside Prime Minister Starmer at his Turnberry golf course in Ayrshire, Scotland, Trump indicated that failure to reach a ceasefire would result in significant penalties. He has threatened to impose 100 percent secondary tariffs on countries that continue trading with Russia, with India and China potentially facing substantial economic repercussions as a result. Additionally, Trump mentioned that new sanctions could target Russian goods directly.
Trump has expressed growing frustration with Putin’s inaction regarding the war, stating that he is “very disappointed in Putin.” He highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict, noting that as many as 7,000 Russian and Ukrainian troops are dying each week, alongside numerous civilian casualties. “He’s gotta make a deal. Too many people are dying,” Trump said, emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation.
The former president’s initial campaign promise was to end the war shortly after taking office. Yet, he acknowledged that achieving peace has proven more challenging than anticipated. Reflecting on his relationship with Putin, Trump remarked, “I’ve always gotten along with President Putin. I never really thought this would happen.” He expressed hope for a resolution but noted that time is running out.
According to Trump, the destruction in Ukraine is severe, with Russian forces significantly damaging infrastructure. “They’re taking out the electric — it’s gonna take years to rebuild it,” he stated. He pointed out that many cities have been left in ruins and that while numerous residents have fled, many continue to endure the hardships of war.
In a notable shift, Trump has softened his stance on military support for Ukraine, having recently reached an agreement to supply weapons to NATO countries for this purpose. “I’m not so interested in talking anymore,” he concluded, signaling a decisive approach to the ongoing negotiations.
Trump is expected to issue an official announcement regarding the ceasefire deadline on Monday evening or Tuesday, a move that may further shape international responses to the ongoing conflict.
