Leominster’s Osiris Lopez Sets State Record in Thanksgiving Victory
Leominster High School celebrated a triumphant Thanksgiving Day as senior quarterback Osiris Lopez delivered an impressive performance, marking the end of his high school career on a high note. In a dominant display against Fitchburg, Lopez set a state record by throwing his 123rd career touchdown pass, concluding the game with six touchdown passes in a resounding 59-6 victory at historic Crocker Field.
This match-up, part of a storied rivalry dating back to 1894, represented the 145th overall meeting and the 119th Thanksgiving Day clash between the two teams. With this latest win, Leominster improved its record to 8-3 and now holds a commanding lead in the series with a 74-61-10 advantage. Additionally, Leominster has claimed victory in seven consecutive holiday games and 19 of the last 21 Turkey Day contests.
Coach Devin Gates, in his sixth year at the helm, expressed his delight not only for the result but also for Lopez’s achievement. “The kids executed,” he said. “We’re happy for the kids; any time you can win on Thanksgiving, it’s great.” He also praised Lopez for his advocacy of Central Massachusetts football, emphasizing that his success transcends mere statistics.
Fitchburg, which ended its season with a 2-9 record, showed early promise but struggled to contain Leominster’s offensive onslaught. Despite a determined start, highlighted by a 12-yard run from freshman Cole Lashua, the Red Raiders were unable to sustain momentum against a well-prepared Leominster defense.
Lopez’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. He completed 13 of 19 passes for 150 yards, and his first touchdown pass came after an interception by Elijah Rivera. After moving the ball deep into Fitchburg territory, Lopez connected with Jayden Wilbon for a three-yard touchdown. This initial score set the tone for the game, leading to a quick succession of touchdowns that left Fitchburg reeling.
Leominster’s offense benefited from exceptional field position, largely due to senior Ryan Ricker‘s impressive punt returns, which totaled 170 yards. Ricker’s playmaking ability allowed Lopez to quickly extend the lead. His contributions included a touchdown reception that bolstered the team’s score to 32-0 before halftime.
Despite the overwhelming score, Coach Gates acknowledged the effort displayed by the Fitchburg players. “They came out and played well,” he said. “They started off really tough, and we had to make some adjustments.” This acknowledgment reflects the spirit of competition that defines this longstanding rivalry.
As the game progressed, Lopez continued to shine, ultimately breaking the state record with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Aiden Keyes. This accomplishment not only solidified his legacy but also marked a significant milestone in Massachusetts high school football history.
Looking ahead, Lopez plans to forgo his senior basketball season to prepare for his upcoming collegiate football career at Coastal Carolina, set to begin in January 2026. His commitment to remaining in public schools has made him a local hero, inspiring young athletes across the region.
The Thanksgiving Day showdown underscored the deep-rooted tradition of high school football in the area, where community pride and rivalry come together each year. As Leominster celebrates another victorious chapter, both teams look to build on their experiences for the future, with hopes of continuing to grow within this cherished rivalry.
