Longview’s Salvation Army Bell-Ringer Drives Holiday Generosity
As the sun set on the afternoon of November 22, 2023, Debra Ward stood ringing her bell outside the Walmart on Estes Parkway in Longview, Texas. The annual Red Kettle campaign, a cornerstone of the Salvation Army’s fundraising efforts, has commenced, marking both the holiday season and a time of increased need for many in the community.
The Salvation Army has a long history of providing vital services, including homeless shelters and disaster relief, focusing on helping individuals regain their quality of life. This year, the organization aims to raise $200,000 through its Red Kettle campaign, which relies heavily on donations collected at storefronts nationwide.
Ward, who has been a bell-ringer since 2018, finds joy in her role, encouraging shoppers to contribute to the red buckets. “I like bell-ringing because I like to see the people, and I like greeting them,” she said. Her enthusiasm is evident as she interacts with passersby, hoping to inspire generosity during this critical time.
The need for assistance in East Texas is heightened during the holiday season, as many individuals face food insecurity and homelessness. With countless children at risk of waking up without gifts this Christmas, the Salvation Army’s mission to “Do the Most Good” resonates deeply within the community.
For Ward, bell-ringing offers more than just a modest boost to her income; it provides a sense of purpose. She recalls a memorable encounter with a young girl who donated multiple times during her shifts. “Seeing happy, smiling people come by to drop money in the bucket gives me a good feeling,” she shared.
Wearing a blue baseball cap that reads “Love Like Jesus,” Ward emphasizes her support for the Salvation Army, a Christian organization she believes truly allocates its resources where they are needed most. “They really put their money where it belongs in the community,” she added, reflecting her commitment to the cause.
The Red Kettle campaign will continue through December 24, 2023, with bell-ringers stationed at various Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, as well as other stores during normal operating hours. As Ward encourages donations, she expresses her hopes for the campaign’s success, praying for the community’s generosity this holiday season.
As shoppers drop coins and cash into the buckets, Ward’s warm wishes follow: “Thank you, and have a memorable Thanksgiving and Christmas.” This spirit of giving is what the Salvation Army aims to foster, ensuring that those in need receive support when it matters most.
