Glenn Close has come to the defense of Kim Kardashian and their new Hulu series, All’s Fair, following a wave of negative reviews. Critics have labeled the show as “existentially terrible,” yet Close insists that the series is worth watching. In an interview with The Guardian, published on November 15, 2023, the acclaimed actress stated, “I swear to God, I’ve seen all nine episodes and it’s pretty f**king good.” She described the series as “juicy and outrageous at times and touching,” emphasizing the effort that Kardashian puts into her work.

Close highlighted Kardashian’s dedication as a mother and her commitment to her education. “When we were filming, she was working towards her law degree, and near the end, she would have flashcards,” Close noted. Kardashian has since completed her law degree but has expressed that she does not plan to practice law, stating, “I just want it in my back pocket.”

The show, which premiered three episodes on November 4, 2023, was created by Ryan Murphy and features an ensemble cast that includes Close, Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash, and Sarah Paulson. Despite its star-studded lineup, critics have not held back in their assessments. Lucy Mangan, a TV critic for The Guardian, gave the series a rare zero-star review, claiming it was “so bad it’s not even enjoyably so.”

Mangan expressed disbelief that a show could be made with such poor execution, saying, “I assumed that there was some sort of baseline… but I was wrong.” She criticized the premise of the show, which focuses on an all-female law firm helping wealthy women, as “terrible” and described the overall production as “fascinatingly, incomprehensibly, existentially terrible.”

Similarly, Ben Dowell, deputy TV editor for The Times, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the show might be “the worst TV drama ever.” He remarked that it attempted to portray a feminist narrative but ended up being a “tacky and revolting monument to the same greed, vanity, and avarice it supposedly targets.” Dowell further critiqued Kardashian’s acting skills, stating, “She is to acting what Genghis Khan is to a peaceful liberal democracy.”

Despite the backlash, a source close to Kardashian reported to Us Weekly that she remains positive about the series and its reception. “Kim is so happy with how much the fans love the show and it’s still No. 1 on Hulu three days in,” the source revealed. Kardashian has reportedly joked that the negative press may be drawing in more viewers, showcasing her resilience and commitment to her projects.

The synopsis for All’s Fair presents the series as one where fierce, brilliant women navigate high-stakes breakups and scandals within the context of a law firm dedicated to delivering justice to wealthy clients. As the reviews continue to pour in, it remains to be seen whether the series can overcome its rocky start and find a more favorable reception among audiences.
