Hampton University Triumphs Over Brown Despite Blocked Shots
Hampton University secured a hard-fought 72-63 victory against Brown University on November 24, 2023, during the College Hill Classic held in Providence, Rhode Island. The Pirates’ win marked their first road triumph of the season, improving their record to 2-2.
Despite facing a formidable defense, particularly from Brown’s N’famara Dabo, who recorded an impressive 11 blocked shots, Hampton managed to maintain control throughout the game. Michael Eley led the Pirates with 18 points, while Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt contributed 16 points and six assists. Daniel Johnson made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 17 points along with four steals and three rebounds. Xzavier Long was also pivotal, grabbing 15 rebounds to support the team’s efforts on both ends of the court.
The game shifted in Hampton’s favor early in the second half when Eley hit a vital 3-pointer, establishing a lead that the Pirates would not relinquish. They extended their advantage to as many as 12 points, demonstrating resilience even as they faced setbacks. Although the team struggled with their shooting, finishing 24 of 59 from the field, they compensated by effectively converting free throws, making 22 of 28 attempts.
Brown, now 0-4 this season, saw contributions from Jeremiah Jenkins, who scored 21 points, and Isaiah Langham, who added 13. Dabo’s defensive prowess was notable, as he not only protected the rim but also scored 11 points and secured seven rebounds in 37 minutes of play.
Hampton’s victory was a testament to their ability to adapt and overcome challenges posed by strong individual performances. The Pirates will look to build on this momentum as they continue their season against upcoming opponents.
In other notable matchups, Towson defeated Norfolk State 51-41, with a strong performance from Dylan Williamson, who scored 12 points for the Tigers. In a high-energy game, No. 4 Duke dominated Indiana State, with freshman Cameron Boozer scoring 35 points, showcasing his potential as a rising star.
The competitive landscape of college basketball remains intense, with teams striving for supremacy as the season progresses.
