Salvation Army Launches Red Kettle Campaign to Meet Growing Needs

The Salvation Army Fitchburg Corps has officially launched its annual Red Kettle Campaign to address rising community needs this holiday season. The kickoff event took place on November 12, 2023, at the organization’s Water Street headquarters, where staff, volunteers, and local officials gathered amidst a light snowfall. The event included the traditional Tree of Lights ceremony, symbolizing the start of fundraising efforts aimed at assisting families in need.

Longtime Envoy Lynette Valentine-Warren highlighted the increasing demand for assistance. “The need is great. People are hungry, the food pantry has been a revolving door,” she stated, noting that requests for help have surged, partly due to the recent government shutdown that left many federal employees unpaid and affected food assistance programs. Valentine-Warren urged community members to “give with joy” towards this year’s fundraising goal of $125,000, which will provide food, holiday gifts, and housing support for local families.

Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squailia emphasized that all donations remain within the community, underscoring that approximately 35% of city residents receive SNAP benefits. “Every donation matters,” he remarked, encouraging residents to contribute generously during the campaign.

The event saw a significant early contribution, with Herb White donating $1,000 in memory of his late wife, Donna White. The couple had volunteered with the Salvation Army for many years, and White continues to carry on that legacy by ringing bells during the holiday season. He noted that his former employer, Workers Credit Union, also supports the campaign by matching donations.

Volunteer bell ringers play a crucial role in the campaign, with many dedicated individuals contributing their time year after year. Sandor Nemcsik, who has been ringing bells for 15 years, shared that he finds joy in hearing stories from those who have benefited from the Salvation Army’s services. Fellow bell ringer Thea Babineau echoed this sentiment, stating that her involvement began when her sister participated, and she appreciates the connections made while giving back.

Community Support and Engagement

The Salvation Army has been a vital presence in the Fitchburg area for over 135 years, utilizing the Red Kettle Campaign since the 1890s to fund essential services. This year, the Massachusetts Division aims to raise $2.3 million statewide to support those struggling with the rising cost of living and poverty during the holidays.

Valentine-Warren called on local organizations and businesses to participate in the campaign as donors or bell ringers. “It’s going to be an amazing year,” said her twin sister, Jeanette Valentine, who is assisting with the campaign. She encourages families to volunteer together to help foster a spirit of community and support.

In her closing remarks, Valentine-Warren expressed gratitude for the community’s ongoing support. “Thank you for all you do. It does not go unappreciated,” she said. She emphasized the collective effort needed to reach their fundraising goal, stating, “It takes a village. Let’s fill the kettles and make it the best holiday season ever.”
