Anne Arundel County’s Top High School Athletes Shine (Nov. 3-9)
Each week, Anne Arundel County high schools showcase outstanding athletic performances, and from November 3 to November 9, several athletes distinguished themselves with remarkable achievements. As part of this recognition, The Capital Gazette has opened a public poll for readers to vote for the Athlete of the Week, allowing fans to participate in celebrating local talent.
Last week, the title of Athlete of the Week went to Shayna Tobin from Severn Run girls soccer, who earned 23.8% of the public vote. She triumphed over other contenders, including Kendall Jones from Broadneck football, who received 16.2%, and Trish Maloney from Broadneck field hockey at 12.2%.
This Week’s Top Performers
The following athletes have made significant contributions to their teams, showcasing talent, skill, and determination:
Alex Bubnov from Key boys soccer returned from an injury to score a hat trick in the MIAA C Conference semifinal victory on Thursday. He also played a crucial role in the championship win, contributing one of three penalty kick goals on Sunday.
In football, Korey Warren of South River demonstrated his prowess by rushing for four touchdowns and accumulating 162 yards in a commanding 69-0 victory against J.M. Bennett during the first round of the Class 3A postseason.
Frankie “Tre” Kelly from Severn Run made history by winning the Class 4A boys 5K race, securing the Wolves’ first-ever state title with a time of 16:09.27.
In field hockey, Sofi Weber of Severna Park made her mark by scoring the game-winner during a double overtime semifinal against Winston Churchill, followed by a decisive goal in the Class 4A state final against Leonardtown.
Goalkeeper Teo LaPointe from Key boys soccer played a pivotal role in the MIAA C Conference championship, making seven saves, including a crucial stop during penalty kicks.
In cheerleading, Janae Woodward from Broadneck helped lead the Bruins to their first-ever state title at the Class 4A state championships, showcasing outstanding performance and teamwork.
Cross country runner Lexi Fitzsimmons of Severna Park excelled, placing fifth overall at the Class 3A state championships with a time of 19:38.7, contributing to her team’s victory.
Volleyball standout Bailey Swinton from Arundel delivered an impressive performance with nine kills, three aces, and six digs in the Class 3A East I Region final, followed by 14 kills, one ace, and 28 digs during a state quarterfinal match against Wootton.
Lastly, Ava Scott from Severna Park girls soccer played a critical role by scoring the game-winning goal against Towson, propelling her team to the state championships.
These athletes exemplify the spirit of competition and demonstrate the high level of talent present in Anne Arundel County. As the community rallies around its young sports stars, the public poll remains open for readers to cast their votes for the Athlete of the Week until Friday evening.
