Pittsburgh Group Expands Legal Aid for Immigrants Amid Deportation Fears
A refugee resettlement organization in Pittsburgh is significantly expanding its immigration legal services to assist a broader community of immigrants. This initiative by Hello Neighbor comes as concerns rise over the Trump administration’s increased deportation efforts, which have left many immigrants feeling anxious about their legal status.
Historically, Hello Neighbor focused solely on the individuals it directly resettled. With new funding, the organization can now extend its support to others in need. Founder Sloane Davidson noted that while many immigrants previously prioritized other aspects of their lives over citizenship, the current political climate has prompted a shift in urgency. “They just didn’t see the need, but they see the need now because they’re scared,” she explained.
An investigation by ProPublica revealed that over 170 U.S. citizens have been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, highlighting the precarious situation many face. Davidson emphasized the importance of securing a Green Card, stating that those who hold one may be better positioned to access essential services and less likely to attract unwanted attention from immigration authorities. “In this administration, if you have a Green Card, you’re going to be able to receive more services,” she added.
Expanding Services to Meet Community Needs
Hello Neighbor’s expansion of legal services has been in the planning stages since before the current administration took office. The organization dedicated nearly a year to assessing community needs and evaluating what services other providers offer. This included reaching out to resettlement agencies nationwide to learn best practices and raise funds for the initiative.
The services now available at Hello Neighbor include assistance with Green Card applications and replacements, citizenship applications, marriage-based immigrant visa petitions, and family reunification petitions. These services are offered on a sliding scale based on income, making them accessible to a wider range of applicants. Initial consultations are free, and Davidson emphasized that if her team is unable to assist, they will refer individuals to other organizations that can help.
While the group is expanding its support, it is important to note that Hello Neighbor cannot process asylum applications, represent clients in removal proceedings, or handle family law matters. Additionally, they do not provide services for unaccompanied minors, detainment defense, or employment visas.
A Safe Space for Immigrants
Davidson highlighted that the organization aims to create a safe environment for immigrants seeking help. “If people have questions, we’re a safe space. They can come, make an appointment, and talk and see,” she said. This initiative not only addresses immediate legal needs but also serves as a means to better understand the broader requirements of the immigrant community.
As Hello Neighbor continues to expand its reach, the organization remains committed to supporting those who feel vulnerable in today’s climate. The urgency felt by many immigrants reflects a changing landscape where the need for legal assistance is more pressing than ever. Through its efforts, Hello Neighbor aims to empower individuals and families, ensuring they have the resources to navigate the complexities of immigration law and secure their place in the community.
