Collin Morikawa Struggles for Form Amidst Changes on Tour
Collin Morikawa’s performance on the PGA Tour has faltered significantly since March 2025. The 28-year-old golfer, who previously showcased his talent as a two-time major champion, has struggled to maintain consistent form. Following a tied for tenth finish at The Players Championship, he managed only one additional top-10 finish throughout the remainder of the year. His season has been punctuated by numerous obstacles, including the unsettling experience of switching caddies five times.
Morikawa’s challenges became particularly evident during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last month. His inability to find his rhythm raised concerns, especially as he has not secured a victory since October 2023. While Morikawa attributed his difficulties to poor putting, a broader range of issues appears to be affecting his overall game.
Insights from Johnson Wagner
In a recent episode of The 5 Clubs Podcast, former PGA Tour player Johnson Wagner shared his perspective on Morikawa’s situation. When asked which struggling player might reclaim their former glory, Wagner pointed to Morikawa. He noted the young golfer’s significant achievements at such an early stage in his career and expressed confidence in his potential for a comeback.
Wagner stated, “I think Collin Morikawa, he’s 28 years old. I think he’s gone through a lot this year, changing up caddies and once he figures it out, he’s going to be back.” He praised Morikawa’s ball-striking ability and improvements around the greens, suggesting that once Morikawa regains his confidence, a return to winning form could be imminent. Wagner added, “I think he’s going to get another one pretty soon (major championship). Getting back across that finish line one more time is going to get him the confidence he needs.”
Stats Tell a Different Story
Despite Wagner’s optimism, statistics regarding Morikawa’s short game paint a less encouraging picture. Analysis of his performance over the past three years reveals a decline in both his putting and chipping statistics. If Morikawa aims to rediscover his winning ways, focusing on these critical aspects of his game will be essential.
As the 2025 season progresses, Morikawa’s ability to navigate these challenges and regain his form remains a central topic of discussion among golf enthusiasts. With the right adjustments and a renewed focus, he may still have the opportunity to shine once again on the PGA Tour.
