Australia Elects to Bat First Against India in Women’s World Cup Semi
Australia has won the toss and opted to bat first in the second semifinal of the Women’s Cricket World Cup against India, taking place at DY Patil Stadium on March 15, 2024. The defending champions aim for their record-extending eighth final. Captain Alyssa Healy, returning from a calf injury that sidelined her for the last two matches, is poised to lead her team into this crucial clash.
India has made adjustments to their lineup as well, welcoming back attacking opener Shafali Verma. Verma replaces Pratika Rawal, who was ruled out due to an ankle injury sustained while fielding against Bangladesh in the final league game at the same venue. Verma, who has played 29 one-day internationals, has amassed 774 runs at an average of 23 and a strike rate of 83.20. Notably, she was not part of India’s original squad or reserves, making her entry into the playing XI significant.
In addition to Verma’s inclusion, India has made two other changes. Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh returns after a rest, while medium-pacer Kranti Goud takes the place of Harleen Deol. Australia has also made strategic adjustments, with Healy coming in for Georgia Voll and left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux replacing wrist spinner Georgia Wareham.
Australia boasts a strong record against India, having beaten them by three wickets in a high-scoring encounter during the league stage. The team holds an impressive 11-3 record against India in World Cups, and they are currently on a 16-match unbeaten streak in the tournament dating back to 2022.
The pitch at DY Patil Stadium is expected to favor batters, with some spin likely to be seen as the game progresses. While there is a chance of rain, a reserve day is in place to accommodate any interruptions.
As the match unfolds, both teams will be looking to secure a place in the final, with Australia aiming to extend its legacy and India seeking to capitalize on home advantage. The anticipation for this semifinal clash is palpable as fans from both nations await what promises to be an exciting showdown.
