Europe’s Auto Industry Faces Impending Chip Shortages

The European automotive sector is bracing for significant production disruptions due to new export restrictions imposed by China on semiconductors from the Dutch chipmaker Nexperia. These measures, which are expected to affect key suppliers within a week, could have a wider impact across the industry in the next 10 to 20 days, according to sources familiar with the situation who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions.
The Nexperia export restrictions follow the Dutch government’s recent move to take control of the company under emergency legislation aimed at protecting strategic production capabilities. This action has escalated existing tensions in global trade, particularly as the United States and China prepare for high-level negotiations later this month. The new regulations from Beijing come in the wake of earlier restrictions on rare earths and battery materials vital for electric vehicles.
European car manufacturers and their suppliers are currently holding crisis meetings with government officials to formulate contingency plans. However, industry leaders have cautioned that identifying and qualifying alternative components is a complex process that could take months.
According to reports, the fallout from these export restrictions is expected to extend beyond Europe. U.S. automakers may also face challenges due to their reliance on smaller parts and electronics manufacturers that utilize Nexperia chips. The Dutch government’s decision to intervene in Nexperia was reportedly influenced by pressure from Washington, leaving many in the industry taken aback.
Amid this uncertainty, Infineon Technologies AG, a key supplier to the automotive sector, has received numerous inquiries from manufacturers seeking alternative chip sources. Automakers that were initially caught off guard by the situation have since begun communicating with Chinese authorities, as well as officials in the Netherlands and the European Commission. These efforts aim to clarify the extent of the new export controls and explore potential solutions to mitigate their impact on production lines.
Industry Response and Contingency Planning
In light of the challenges posed by the semiconductor shortage, Volkswagen AG has established a task force dedicated to assessing the potential vulnerabilities in its supply chain. Similarly, Robert Bosch GmbH, the world’s largest auto parts manufacturer, has stated that its expert teams are actively engaging with both Nexperia and other suppliers to minimize potential production restrictions. A spokesperson for Bosch remarked on October 21, “Like other Nexperia customers, we are facing major challenges due to the current situation. We therefore hope for a swift resolution among the parties involved that will help ease the current supply bottleneck.”
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz Group AG is closely monitoring the developments with its stakeholders. A spokesperson confirmed that the company has secured short-term chip supplies but noted that the situation remains volatile and difficult to predict. “We are working intensively with our partners to avoid potential supply gaps,” the spokesperson said via email.
As the industry grapples with these challenges, the urgency for a resolution will only grow. The next few weeks will be critical in determining the extent of the disruption and the measures necessary to sustain production levels across Europe’s automotive landscape.
