Following severe flooding in Globe, Arizona, at the end of September, Episcopal Relief & Development has joined forces with the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona to provide essential financial aid to affected residents. The flash floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, resulted in the tragic loss of at least four lives and caused significant damage to the community.

Approximately 1,000 propane tanks were dislodged from a local distribution facility, creating hazardous conditions in the downtown area. As a result, officials have deemed the area unsafe, leading to the temporary closure of many businesses. The efforts of state officials, relief agencies, and volunteers have been crucial in providing immediate support to those in need.

The Rt. Rev. Jennifer Reddall, Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona, described the situation as devastating. “The flood came through downtown on a busy Friday night while the restaurants were full,” she noted, highlighting the significant impact on the community.

In partnership with the Diocese, Episcopal Relief & Development is directing financial assistance to individuals who are temporarily unemployed due to business closures, as well as to working-class families affected by the flooding. St. John’s Episcopal Church in Globe has become a central hub for the community, offering social, emotional, and spiritual support, along with assistance in locating additional aid for recovery.

“We are saddened whenever any lives are lost, and we know that healing and recovery after this disaster will take time,” said Race Hodges, Program Officer at Episcopal Relief & Development. He emphasized the importance of the partnership with the Diocese, stating that it builds upon the trust established within the community.

For those wishing to help, donations to the US Disaster Fund will support local partners in addressing the needs arising from this disaster. Episcopal Relief & Development has been engaged in humanitarian efforts for over 80 years, working alongside a vast network of faith and community organizations to foster lasting change in areas affected by injustice, poverty, disasters, and climate change.

The organization focuses on four interconnected priorities: nurturing caregivers and young children, reducing violence against women and girls, enhancing community resilience to climate change, and facilitating disaster response. With the support of partners, Episcopal Relief & Development aims to drive impactful change and sustainability in the communities they serve.

As the recovery process begins, community members are encouraged to keep the affected areas in their thoughts and prayers. For more information on how to contribute, visit www.episcopalrelief.org/sign-up.
