BirdStock, a popular free street festival, is set to return to Bird Rock on October 25, 2023. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. along La Jolla Boulevard, which will be closed to traffic for the day. This year marks the fourth installment of BirdStock, designed to support local businesses, artists, and community organizations while offering a family-friendly atmosphere filled with live music, food, and activities.

The festival is hosted by the Bird Rock Community Council, which plays a crucial role in organizing the event. According to Arianna Opsvig, co-chair of BirdStock, the goal is to unite the community in a joyful way following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We wanted merchants to feel supported, and for this to be a platform for artisans and musicians in our community,” Opsvig explained.

This year, major sponsorship comes from Lean Focus, alongside contributions from numerous local businesses. “We also have a generous BID Alliance grant this year,” Opsvig added, highlighting the collaborative effort to make the festival successful.

Activities and Live Music Bring Community Together

BirdStock promises a diverse array of entertainment. Multiple stages will feature a wide variety of musical styles, ensuring there is something for everyone. The festival will include family-friendly activities, a beer and wine garden, and an artisan market with over 70 vendors.

Children can enjoy a dedicated Kids’ Zone, which will feature activities such as a pumpkin patch, face painting, a bounce house, and a Pup Parade, along with a costume contest. Opsvig noted that a significant aspect of BirdStock is its fundraising component, with proceeds benefiting Bird Rock Elementary School. “One of the goals is to raise money for Bird Rock Elementary School,” she said, emphasizing the event’s commitment to giving back to the community.

The festival is largely volunteer-driven, with Opsvig stating, “We’re not paid. We really do this for the spirit of the community.” This dedication is evident in the extensive planning and programming for the event.

New Features Enhance the Festival Experience

This year, BirdStock will include a youth stage for the first time, showcasing performances by younger children and teen bands that have participated in other public events. “We have a youth stage for the first time where younger children will be doing choral performances and cheerleading,” Opsvig shared. This initiative aims to highlight the talents of the youth in the community and provide them with a platform to shine.

The temporary closure of La Jolla Boulevard is seen as a significant improvement, creating more space for vendors and activities. Opsvig characterized this change as a “game changer,” allowing for an expanded festival experience.

BirdStock aims to honor the three pillars of the Bird Rock community: residents, merchants, and schools. Opsvig noted that this event is an opportunity for the community to come together, appreciate one another, and celebrate the beauty of their surroundings. “It’s a day for the community to come out and support and appreciate each other,” she said, capturing the spirit of the festival.

As BirdStock approaches, excitement builds for a day filled with music, art, and community spirit, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience the vibrant culture of Bird Rock.
