Israel confirmed that Hamas has handed over two coffins containing the remains of deceased hostages from Gaza. This transfer occurred late on Saturday and comes amid ongoing pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the militant group to expedite the release of the remaining hostages as part of the ceasefire agreement.

The names of the deceased have not yet been disclosed. The bodies are currently in Israel and are being transported to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for identification and further examination. This development marks a significant step in the efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict, which has intensified over the past two years.

Rafah Crossing Remains Closed

In a related announcement, Israel stated that the Rafah Crossing, Gaza’s sole gateway to the outside world, will remain closed “until further notice.” This decision ties directly to the progress of Hamas in releasing the remains of hostages. Earlier on Saturday, Israeli officials had indicated that the crossing was likely to reopen on Sunday, but that plan has now been postponed.

To date, Hamas has returned the remains of 12 out of the 28 hostages believed to be deceased in its custody. This handover is critical to the ongoing ceasefire process, which aims to bring an end to the hostilities that erupted on October 7, 2023. The group has cited widespread devastation and Israeli military control over certain areas of Gaza as factors that have hindered the speed of the handover.

The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts continuing as both sides seek to navigate the complexities of the ceasefire and the humanitarian issues at play. As the conflict persists, the international community closely monitors developments, hoping for a resolution that addresses the needs of all affected parties.
