YouTuber Exposes Alleged $110 Million Daycare Fraud in Minnesota
Nick Shirley, a 23-year-old YouTuber who identifies as an independent journalist, has brought attention to allegations of fraud involving daycare centers in Minnesota. On December 26, 2023, Shirley posted a 42-minute video on his platform on X, showcasing visits to several daycare facilities in Minneapolis that appeared to be unoccupied. He claimed that taxpayer funding, estimated in the millions, was being allocated to these vacant centers, raising serious concerns about potential fraud.
In his video, Shirley asserted, “We uncovered over $110,000,000 in ONE day,” underscoring the scale of the allegations. Following his reporting, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that it would freeze childcare payments to Minnesota as a precautionary measure against the alleged fraud. This immediate response underscores the gravity of his findings and their potential implications on public funding and oversight.
Despite the attention his video garnered, not all media outlets have praised Shirley’s approach. In a segment on CBS News, reporter Jonah Kaplan critiqued the context of Shirley’s reporting, suggesting that many daycares cited for safety violations do not necessarily indicate fraudulent activity. Kaplan’s comments prompted a heated exchange on social media, with Shirley challenging him to visit a daycare himself to understand the situation firsthand.
The fallout from Shirley’s investigation has led to personal repercussions for him as well. He recently disclosed on X that he has received death threats as a result of his work, stating, “This is not a joke, they actually want to kill me.” He shared a screenshot of a threatening message, asking his followers for prayers during this troubling time.
Shirley is not new to the public eye. He has amassed a following of 1.37 million subscribers on YouTube, where he conducts man-on-the-street interviews and travels internationally for content. One notable video, titled “Inside Paris Dangerous Migrant Crisis,” highlights his willingness to tackle contentious issues. Originally from Utah, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile.
In November 2023, Shirley received the Citizen Journalist of the Year award at an event hosted by former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. He expressed gratitude for the recognition on Instagram, stating, “An honor to win the citizen journalist of the year award last night. All of you make it possible so thank you once again, God bless.”
Shirley’s investigative efforts have sparked a broader conversation about accountability in the childcare sector, raising questions about the management of public funds and the integrity of daycare operations in Minnesota. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how authorities will address these serious allegations and what impact they may have on families relying on these essential services.
