The 82nd Venice Film Festival concluded on September 9, 2023, with a ceremony that highlighted the ongoing war in Gaza alongside its celebration of cinematic achievements. The prestigious awards included the coveted Golden Lion for best picture, recognizing outstanding contributions in acting, directing, and filmmaking.

Prominent figures graced the red carpet before the ceremony, including directors such as Benny Safdie for “The Smashing Machine” and Jim Jarmusch for “Father Mother Sister Brother.” Actors like Toni Servillo from “La Grazia” and Luna Wedler, who starred in “Silent Friend,” also made appearances, showcasing the festival’s star-studded lineup.

The festival’s Horizons sidebar, dedicated to discovering new talent, revealed its winners early in the event. The best film award went to David Pablos for “En El Camino,” which explores the world of long-haul trucking in Mexico. Anuparna Roy, who received the best director prize for her debut feature “Songs of Forgotten Trees,” emphasized the need for peace in her acceptance speech, stating, “Every child deserves peace, freedom, liberation, and Palestine is no exception.”

The filmmaker’s remarks resonated with many, as did those of Maryam Touzani, whose film “Calle Málaga” won the audience award. She poignantly remarked, “How many mothers have been made childless? How many more until this horror is brought to an end?”

The ceremony also honored the late Giorgio Armani, a long-time supporter of the festival. Audience members gave a standing ovation in tribute to the fashion icon, with architect Carlo Ratti acknowledging his impact on art and cinema. “Thank you, Giorgio Armani, for teaching us that creativity lives in the spaces where disciplines meet,” Ratti stated.

This year’s main competition featured several films poised for potential Oscar nominations. Notably, Kathryn Bigelow presented “A House of Dynamite,” a thriller addressing nuclear issues, while Guillermo del Toro unveiled his gothic interpretation of “Frankenstein.” Other notable films included Park Chan-wook‘s dark comedy “No Other Choice,” and Dwayne Johnson‘s performance in “The Smashing Machine,” where he portrays a fighter battling addiction.

The festival also showcased films addressing global issues. Nastia Korkia, awarded for her debut film “Short Summer,” intertwined her narrative with the ongoing war in Ukraine, expressing hopes for peace in her acceptance speech. Meanwhile, Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania received acclaim for “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” a harrowing story about a six-year-old girl killed in Gaza that reportedly earned a 22-minute standing ovation.

The film features audio from the actual emergency call made by Hind, juxtaposed with performances from actors portraying first responders, creating a powerful commentary on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The main competition jury, led by Alexander Payne, included notable figures such as Brazilian actor Fernanda Torres and Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof. Both Yorgos Lanthimos and Guillermo del Toro, previous Golden Lion winners, presented films that have historically garnered critical acclaim, including multiple Oscars.

The Venice Film Festival has established a reputation for recognizing significant works, having hosted several best picture winners since 2014, including “The Shape of Water” and “Nomadland.” Last year’s event featured multiple films that later secured Oscars, reinforcing the festival’s status as a key platform for filmmakers.

As the festival wraps up, it leaves behind a legacy of artistic excellence and a poignant reminder of the pressing global issues impacting humanity today. For further coverage of the Venice Film Festival, visit the AP News hub.
