Ukraine has launched a significant drone strike on an exclusive resort in Crimea, reportedly targeting high-profile Russian figures. The attack occurred at approximately 19:30 local time at a dacha and sanatorium complex in Foros, resulting in at least three deaths and 16 injuries. Among those injured, four individuals are in critical condition, with two requiring intensive care.

According to the Crimean Wind channel, the facility is associated with Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), and unnamed “very important” guests were present during the strike. The report suggests that Ukrainian forces had precise intelligence regarding the visitors, some of whom are believed to hold high-ranking positions within the Russian government. The location has historical significance as a retreat where Vladimir Putin has previously stayed.

Details of the Attack

The attack appears to have targeted a restaurant within the complex, where a private gathering was taking place. Video footage released by Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, GUR, showed drones destroying two rare Be-12 anti-submarine amphibious aircraft and an Mi-8 helicopter stationed in Crimea. This marked the first instance of Be-12s being targeted during the ongoing conflict.

The Russian defense ministry condemned the drone strike, describing it as an assault on a “civilian object” involving drones equipped with high-explosive warheads. Additionally, Russian state television reported extensive damage to a school building in Foros, although it is not believed to have been the intended target of the strike.

The Foros assault comes amid heightened tensions, with NATO scrambling jets over Poland in response to a large-scale Russian aerial assault on Ukraine. The escalation underscores the continuing volatility in the region, with both sides engaged in mutual bombardments.

Impact and Broader Context

In the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, Russian shelling resulted in the deaths of at least three civilians, including a 75-year-old woman whose body was recovered from the debris of destroyed homes. Russian forces reportedly dropped five aerial bombs on residential areas, causing severe damage to 15 apartment complexes and 10 private dwellings.

Kyiv has also faced attacks, with Russian claims of targeting US-provided Patriot missile systems in the Boryspil airport area. Simultaneously, drone strikes were documented in the frontier city of Sumy, illustrating the ongoing conflict’s reach.

Further complicating the situation, Vladimir Putin oversaw military exercises involving the nuclear-powered submarine Arkhangelsk, which fired an Onyx cruise missile at a simulated target in the Barents Sea.

In a retaliatory move, Ukraine struck Russia’s Kanevskaya power station in Krasnodar, igniting a fire that disrupted rail connections. Sochi’s international airport was temporarily shut down due to drone alerts, and reports indicated that Taganrog in the Rostov region was also targeted. In Belgorod, local authorities confirmed three fatalities and ten injuries resulting from Ukrainian strikes.

As the conflict continues to escalate, the implications of these military actions remain profound, affecting not only the involved nations but also the broader geopolitical landscape.
