A knife-wielding assailant has been identified as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, following a deadly attack outside a synagogue in Manchester. The incident occurred on the morning of September 28, 2023, coinciding with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Officials confirmed Al-Shamie’s identity, although formal identification processes are still ongoing.

Witnesses reported that Al-Shamie drove into pedestrians near the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue around 09:30 before exiting his vehicle and attacking a security guard with a knife. He was subsequently shot dead by police as he attempted to break into the synagogue. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with one individual stating, “The second he got out of the car, he started stabbing anyone near him. He went for the security guard and tried to break into the synagogue.”

Some witnesses claimed that Al-Shamie was wearing what appeared to be a bomb-laden belt, but no explosions were reported during the assault. The attack left two people dead, both identified as Jewish, and three others in serious condition at local hospitals.

In the aftermath, police arrested at least two other individuals, two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s, during a law enforcement operation in connection with the attack. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of counter-terrorism policing in the UK, confirmed the arrests.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, framing it as a manifestation of rising antisemitism in the UK. He remarked on the platform X, “This was a vile terrorist attack that attacked Jews because they are Jews. Antisemitism is a hatred that is rising, once again. Britain must defeat it, once again.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also expressed his condolences, calling the attack barbaric. He conveyed solidarity with the Jewish community in the UK, stating, “Israel grieves with the Jewish community in the UK after the barbaric attack in Manchester. As I warned the UN: weakness in the face of terrorism only brings more terrorism. Only strength and unity can defeat it.”

This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding antisemitism and security in the UK, particularly during significant religious observances. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the attack and its implications for community safety.
