In a recent interview with CBS News, former President Donald Trump expressed his ongoing commitment to facilitating a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Despite the current uncertainty surrounding potential face-to-face discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump maintains a mix of realism and optimism regarding the situation.

During the phone interview, Trump stated, “I’ve been watching it, I’ve been seeing it, and I’ve been talking about it with President Putin and President Zelenskyy.” He emphasized that while the timing is not yet right for a resolution, he believes that progress will eventually be made. “Something is going to happen. We are going to get it done,” he added.

Ongoing Conflict and Diplomatic Efforts

Trump’s remarks come amid continued violence in Ukraine, including a devastating drone and missile attack by Russia late last month that resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, including four children, according to a city official. Expressing his dismay over the ongoing conflict, he stated, “I think we’re going to get it all straightened out,” acknowledging the challenges of negotiating a peace deal in this complex environment.

Earlier in the day, Trump noted Putin’s participation in a military parade in Beijing alongside leaders from China and North Korea. He remarked on the significance of being aware of these geopolitical developments, saying, “My relationship with all of them is very good.” He hinted at upcoming revelations regarding the state of those relationships in the near future.

Trump’s approach to diplomacy, he explained, often involves bringing key leaders together in real-time discussions, with his guidance aimed at facilitating agreement. This method requires patience, particularly when seeking a swift resolution, but he believes it has proven effective in other peace negotiations throughout the year.

Claims of Success in Diplomatic Negotiations

Trump recently asserted that he should be credited for ending multiple conflicts during his administration, suggesting that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomatic efforts. He referred to several ongoing disputes, including those involving Israel and Iran, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and others.

Critics, including some foreign policy analysts, have challenged Trump’s claims, asserting that many of these conflicts remain unresolved and questioning his role in their negotiations. Nonetheless, Trump maintains that the work of his administration has been instrumental in advancing dialogue among conflicting parties.

He emphasized the importance of fostering a mindset of peace among leaders entrenched in conflict. “They’re fighting each other for so long, they don’t even think in terms of peace. It just becomes a way of life,” he explained. Trump’s strategy focuses on creating a conducive environment for dialogue, stating, “When I get them together, I get the people in the room, I’m able to convince them. ‘Let’s go. Let’s make peace. It’s enough, already. You’ve lost enough lives.'”

Despite the accolades he believes he deserves, Trump clarified that he is not actively seeking the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, with its recipient expected to be announced next month. “I have nothing to say about it,” he remarked, adding, “I don’t seek attention. I just want to save lives.”

As international attention remains focused on the escalating conflict in Ukraine, Trump’s commitment to pursuing a peace agreement underscores the complexities and challenges of diplomatic efforts in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
