Trump Hails Productive Talks Aimed at Ending Gaza Conflict

Negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza have been termed “intense and productive” by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Following a series of discussions with Arab leaders in New York, Trump announced that talks would continue “as long as necessary.” In a post on Truth Social, he indicated that these discussions have been taking place for four days and are focused on achieving a “Successfully Completed Agreement.”

While Trump did not disclose specific details about the negotiations, he reiterated a key condition he has previously emphasized: the return of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas. He called for “PERMANENT AND LONG-LASTING PEACE,” underscoring the urgency and importance of the talks. Historically, negotiations for either a complete end to hostilities or a temporary ceasefire have faltered, with both sides accusing one another of reneging on commitments.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke at the United Nations General Assembly on the same day, asserting that Israel would continue military operations until all hostages are released and Hamas is disarmed. During his speech, Netanyahu faced significant backlash, including a mass walkout by diplomats. He reiterated his determination to “finish the job” against Hamas, criticizing the recognition of a Palestinian state by several Western nations.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and led to the abduction of 251 hostages. In response, both Israel and the United States have expressed concerns that recognizing a Palestinian state could reward Hamas for its actions.

Trump noted that Hamas is “very much aware” of the ongoing discussions, adding that Israel has been kept informed at all levels, including Netanyahu. He expressed optimism, stating, “There is more Goodwill and Enthusiasm for getting a Deal done, after so many decades, than I have ever seen before.”

During the recent General Assembly, Trump presented proposals to several Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt, according to his special envoy, Steve Witkoff. Meanwhile, Netanyahu met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, who emphasized the urgent need for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. Bin Zayed also reiterated support for a two-state solution amid Israel’s plans for settlement expansion in the West Bank.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with over 65,000 people reportedly killed since the onset of the conflict, according to health officials in the Hamas-controlled enclave. Israel’s military actions have displaced approximately 90% of the population and devastated large areas of the territory.

In September, Israeli forces launched a ground offensive in Gaza City, leading to further displacements of residents. Doctors Without Borders announced that it has had to cease operations in northern Gaza due to the encirclement of its clinics by Israeli forces, stating, “We have been left with no choice but to stop our activities.”

The escalating conflict has dominated discussions at the United Nations General Assembly this week. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the assembly via video, condemning the violence faced by Palestinians in Gaza. He characterized the situation as a “war of genocide, destruction, starvation, and displacement,” and clarified that Palestinians do not support Hamas’ actions on October 7.

As talks progress, the international community will be watching closely to see if an agreement can be reached that addresses the humanitarian crisis and lays the groundwork for lasting peace in the region.
