Travel Restrictions Lifted Following Major Police Search for Dezi Freeman

Victorian authorities have announced the easing of travel restrictions in the Porepunkah area after a comprehensive police operation aimed at capturing fugitive Dezi Freeman. This operation, described as Australia’s “largest ever” tactical policing effort, was launched in response to Freeman’s alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of two police officers on August 26, 2023.
Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby, has been evading law enforcement since the incident, which occurred while officers were executing a search warrant at his residence in northeastern Victoria. Following this event, travel warnings restricted movement in and around Porepunkah for more than two weeks. The authorities had offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Freeman’s capture, which has resulted in over 1,100 tips from the public.
Search Efforts and Community Impact
On Sunday, Russell Barrett, acting deputy commissioner of the Victorian Police, addressed the media to announce the relaxation of travel warnings, stating, “Today we say to the community of Victoria, we are making a slight lift in the travel warnings for the Porepunkah area.” Barrett emphasized the importance of restoring a sense of normalcy to the community while clarifying that the Mount Buffalo National Park remains closed and search efforts continue in the region.
The extensive operation on Friday involved more than 125 specialist officers, including personnel seconded from all Australian states and New Zealand. Barrett noted the challenging terrain, describing how officers navigated rugged landscapes, including caves, rivers, and gorges, in their pursuit of Freeman. “Our resolve to find Freeman does not change,” he stated, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the search that covered hundreds of properties, both occupied and abandoned.
Community Concerns and Ongoing Investigation
The search for Freeman has raised significant concerns within the local community, with speculation surrounding how he has managed to evade capture in the harsh alpine terrain. Barrett acknowledged that there may be individuals assisting him, saying, “We are looking for a person who is [allegedly] armed [and] dangerous.” The police remain vigilant, taking every precaution due to the potential risks associated with the ongoing search.
Local residents have voiced their concerns, with some suggesting that Freeman may be hiding in a mineshaft or an underground bunker. When questioned about whether lifting the travel restrictions indicated that police believed Freeman had left the area, Barrett reiterated the ongoing nature of the investigation. “He may still be in that area … he may be harboured, or he may be dead,” he stated, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the case.
Barrett concluded by acknowledging the delicate balance law enforcement must maintain while conducting their operations and minimizing disruption to the local community. “We’re talking to them about that all the time,” he said, emphasizing the police’s commitment to both public safety and community engagement.
As authorities continue their search for Dezi Freeman, the community of Porepunkah remains on alert, hopeful for a resolution to this high-stakes situation.
