Switzerland Holds National Mourning for Victims of Bar Fire
Switzerland is set to observe a national day of mourning on January 5, 2024, honoring the memory of the 40 individuals who lost their lives in a tragic fire at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana. The fire erupted during a New Year’s celebration shortly after midnight on January 1, injuring an additional 116 people, many with severe burns.
The inferno is believed to have been ignited by sparkling candles placed atop Champagne bottles, which reportedly came into contact with the ceiling, setting off the blaze. As investigations continue, authorities are scrutinizing whether the soundproofing material used in the bar adhered to safety regulations. Additionally, they are assessing if the use of candles was permitted under local fire safety codes.
Criminal Investigation Underway
The Valais region’s chief prosecutor has announced that a criminal investigation has been launched targeting the bar’s managers. They face potential charges of involuntary homicide, involuntary bodily harm, and unintentionally causing a fire. This scrutiny comes as it was revealed that fire safety inspections for the establishment had not been conducted since 2019, raising serious questions about compliance with safety standards.
The devastation of the fire has made identifying some of the victims particularly challenging. In several cases, families have been required to provide DNA samples due to the severity of the burns. Many of the deceased were reported to be teenagers or in their mid-20s, underscoring the tragedy’s impact on the community.
As part of the national day of mourning, church bells across Switzerland will toll for five minutes, starting at 14:00 local time, followed by a minute of silence to reflect on the lives lost and the ongoing recovery of those injured.
This solemn event serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety regulations and the need for stringent enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future.
