Space Force Seeks Proposals for Advanced Missile Interceptors

The United States Space Force has announced plans to solicit proposals for prototype kinetic energy space-based interceptors (SBIs) designed for midcourse missile defense. According to the Space Systems Command (SSC), a formal request will be issued to industry on December 7, 2023. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s missile defense capabilities, particularly against intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

The pre-solicitation notice released by the SSC indicates that the program will likely follow a prize-based model similar to the one established for boost-phase SBIs in September. The SSC envisions implementing “multiple fixed price Other Transaction Agreements” and may incorporate additional prize competitions. Specific technical details remain sparse, with the notice emphasizing that the focus is on hit-to-kill systems rather than directed-energy solutions.

Interested companies are required to request bidding documents by December 4. The SSC has stated that it anticipates awarding contracts in February 2026. This timeline suggests a strategic move towards enhancing the United States’ defense architecture against potential missile threats.
