Russian Drone and Missile Assault Claims Lives in Kyiv
A significant Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, early on March 14, 2024, has resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left 24 others injured, according to local authorities. The casualties include two children, as reported by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, who indicated that the death toll may rise as rescue efforts continue.
Emergency services are currently working to rescue those trapped in the debris of damaged buildings. The attack involved a combination of decoy drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, as detailed by Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s city administration. Impacts were reported at over 20 locations across seven districts, with nearly 100 buildings sustaining damage. A five-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district was directly struck, leading Tkachenko to describe the destruction as “everything is destroyed.” Additionally, a central road in Kyiv was left littered with shattered glass due to the strikes.
Details of the Attack
This recent assault marks the first major combined drone and missile attack on Kyiv since a high-profile meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this month. The discussions were reportedly aimed at exploring avenues to conclude the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has lasted for three years. Despite the diplomatic overtures, details regarding subsequent steps remain scarce.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hopes for more stringent U.S. sanctions targeting the Russian economy, contingent on Putin’s willingness to take meaningful steps toward ending the war. The recent escalation in hostilities raises questions about the viability of diplomatic solutions in the near term and underscores the ongoing volatility in the region.
As the situation develops, the Ukrainian government continues to call for international support and attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding as a result of these attacks.
