Manhunt Continues for Gunman After Fatal Police Shootout

Australian police are intensifying their efforts to apprehend a 56-year-old man, identified as Dezi Freeman, who is suspected of killing two officers during a violent confrontation earlier this week. Freeman allegedly opened fire when a police team arrived at his property in the small town of Porepunkah, located in northeastern Victoria, on October 10, 2023. Following the incident, he fled into the surrounding bushland.

Details of the Incident

The violent exchange occurred when a team of ten officers attempted to execute a search warrant at Freeman’s residence. Within minutes, gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of Detective Neal Thompson, aged 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, aged 35. A third officer sustained injuries and has since undergone surgery but is expected to recover.

In a press conference, Russell Barrett, Victoria police deputy commissioner for regional operations, emphasized the urgency of the manhunt. “We will not rest until we apprehend the offender,” he stated, highlighting that the police are actively engaging with Freeman’s partner and conducting searches in the rugged terrain. Despite these efforts, Barrett admitted there have been “no confirmed sightings” of the suspect.

Freeman has been described by local media as a radicalized conspiracy theorist, which adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing search. He is believed to be heavily armed, possesses bush survival skills, and is familiar with the local area, complicating the police’s efforts to locate him.

Public Safety Concerns

Authorities are urging the public to avoid the alpine region near Porepunkah, warning that the terrain is challenging. Superintendent Brett Kahan of Victoria police remarked on the difficulty of navigating the bush, stating, “It is really difficult terrain. It is complex terrain.” Police have made it clear that anyone found harboring Freeman will face criminal charges.

The recent shootings have sparked discussions about law enforcement safety in Australia, where such incidents are relatively rare. According to Australia’s The Age newspaper, Freeman is a self-professed “sovereign citizen,” a term used to describe individuals who reject governmental authority and laws. His previous court appearances reveal a history of confrontational remarks towards law enforcement, including derogatory comments made during a speeding violation case.

In 2023, only three officers were killed in separate incidents while on duty, including one by gunfire, reflecting the increasing concern over police safety. The last significant incident occurred in December 2022, when a family in Queensland engaged police in a deadly shootout, leading to the deaths of six individuals, including two officers.

Since the implementation of strict gun control laws following the tragic 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which claimed 35 lives, Australia has seen a significant reduction in gun-related violence. Nevertheless, the recent events in Victoria have reignited discussions about public safety and the potential risks posed by individuals with radical beliefs.

As the manhunt for Dezi Freeman continues, the police remain vigilant, determined to restore safety and apprehend the suspect who has caused such tragic loss in the community.
