Landslide in Sudan Claims Over 1,000 Lives, Destroys Village

A catastrophic landslide devastated Tarasin Village in Central Darfur, Sudan, on August 31, 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 1,000 individuals, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM-A). The group, which controls the area, reported that the landslide was precipitated by continuous torrential rainfall throughout late August.
The SLM-A stated, “Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand people. Only one person survived.” While these figures remain unverified due to limited access to the affected region, should they be confirmed, this incident would rank among the most lethal natural disasters in Sudan’s recent history.
Humanitarian Response and Local Impact
In the wake of this disaster, Minni Minnawi, the governor of Darfur, described the landslide as a “humanitarian tragedy.” The SLM-A has urgently appealed for support from the United Nations and international aid agencies to assist in body recovery efforts and address the immediate needs of survivors.
Reports suggest that many residents of North Darfur had sought refuge in Tarasin Village, fleeing violence from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Their plight underscores the ongoing instability in the region, which has been marred by conflict and displacement.
The landslide has not only resulted in a staggering loss of life but has also obliterated the village’s infrastructure, leaving survivors in dire conditions. The need for humanitarian assistance is critical, as rescue operations face challenges due to the remote location and ongoing conflict in the area.
As the situation evolves, it remains crucial for the international community to respond promptly to this disaster, ensuring that support reaches those affected in Central Darfur.
