Democratic Representative Jerry Nadler of New York declared he will not seek reelection in the upcoming 2026 midterms. This decision aligns with a trend among several long-serving Democrats who are stepping aside to make way for younger candidates. At 78 years old, Nadler has completed 17 terms in Congress and expressed in an interview with the New York Times that he feels it is time for “a changing of the guard.”

Reflecting on his reasoning, Nadler remarked that observing former President Joe Biden‘s reelection campaign last year underscored the need for generational change within the party. “Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect that,” he stated. Nadler believes a younger leader might “maybe do better, can maybe help us more.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, Nadler emphasized the difficulty of his decision, stating, “I know in my heart it is the right one.” He indicated plans to remain actively engaged in his community and continue advocating for the causes he has championed throughout his career. “My plans for the next sixteen months, however, are clear. I will continue to give everything I have to defend our democracy, protect our institutions, and fight for the values that as Americans and New Yorkers we share.”

Nadler’s announcement adds to a growing list of long-serving Democratic lawmakers who will not pursue reelection in 2026. Among them are Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, 80, from Illinois; Senator Jeanne Shaheen, 78, from New Hampshire; and other notable figures like Senator Tina Smith, 67, of Minnesota, and Senator Gary Peters, 66, of Michigan. Additionally, Rep. Danny Davis, 83, of Illinois, has also announced his retirement.

Nadler has been a fixture in Congress since his election in 1992. He served as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee from 2019 to 2023 and transitioned to ranking member after Republicans regained control of the House. He stepped down from this role late last year. When asked about potential successors, Nadler acknowledged several allies but refrained from naming anyone specifically.

One of those aspiring to fill Nadler’s seat is Liam Elkind, 26, who entered the race last month. Elkind advocates for supporting younger leaders to revitalize the Democratic Party. In a post on X, he praised Nadler’s leadership, stating, “He has led this district and this country with humanity, kindness, and intelligence. We are better for his leadership.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul lauded Nadler as “a champion, a fighter and a trusted voice for New Yorkers,” expressing gratitude for his dedicated service. Similarly, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, also from New York, highlighted Nadler’s commitment to his constituents, particularly in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks. Jeffries remarked, “Jerry’s years of leadership have earned him a spot among our nation’s greatest public servants.”

As Nadler prepares to transition out of his congressional role, he leaves behind a legacy marked by his commitment to Democratic values and advocacy for his constituents. His decision to retire not only signals a shift in leadership but also emphasizes the importance of fostering new voices in politics.
