House Democrats Seek Censure of Rep. Mills Over Assault Allegations

House Democrats have introduced a resolution to censure Representative Cory Mills, a Republican from Florida, following allegations of assault and concerns regarding his military record. The resolution, presented on Wednesday, asserts that Mills has behaved in a manner that discredits the integrity of the House of Representatives.

The measure details an incident that occurred on February 19, 2025, at Mills’s residence in Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police officers responded to reports of an alleged assault. The alleged victim, a 27-year-old woman who is not married to Mills, claimed that he had grabbed and shoved her. According to the police report, she exhibited “bruises on her arm which appeared fresh.” The resolution cites a news report indicating that the woman also recorded Mills instructing her to lie about the cause of her injuries.

In addition to the February incident, the resolution references a similar case from July 2025, in which a former partner of Mills reported threats to release explicit images of her and harm her future romantic relationships. The investigation into the D.C. incident was closed following changes in the leadership of the Metropolitan Police Department after the election of former President Donald Trump.

In a statement to The Hill, Mills expressed gratitude to the Metropolitan Police for their investigation, claiming that the accusations against him were “false and misleading.” He argued that the media’s portrayal of the situation was politically motivated, aimed at influencing the 2026 election.

Ethical Concerns and Military Record Questions

The censure resolution also raises ethical concerns regarding Mills’s conduct while in office. It references a report from the Office of Congressional Conduct from 2024, which suggests that there is “substantial reason to believe” Mills may have misrepresented his financial disclosures, accepted improper campaign contributions, and held federal contracts during his term.

Moreover, questions have emerged regarding the legitimacy of the Bronze Star awarded to Mills in 2021. Testimony from a fellow servicemember described the award recommendation process as a “fabrication,” casting further doubt on Mills’s military accolades.

The Democratic push to censure Mills follows a previous attempt by Republicans to censure Representative LaMonica McIver, a Democrat from New Jersey, after she faced assault charges, which she has denied. The resolution against Mills was spearheaded by the Congressional Black Caucus, emphasizing the dual goal of holding Mills accountable while supporting McIver.

In a statement to Politico, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), highlighted that their efforts to address the allegations against Mills reflect a commitment to justice within the Caucus. Clarke read the entirety of the censure resolution on the House Floor, signaling the seriousness with which Democrats are approaching the matter.

As this situation unfolds, the implications for Mills and the House of Representatives remain significant, with potential consequences for both personal and political futures.
