Hilton Apologizes for Canceling Immigration Agents’ Hotel Rooms
A hotel in Minnesota has issued an apology after canceling reservations for federal immigration agents, which it later acknowledged was against its own policies. The incident involved the Hampton Inn Lakeville, a property under the Hilton brand, located approximately 20 miles (32.19 kilometers) south of Minneapolis.
The controversy began when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused Hilton of a “coordinated” effort to deny service to its immigration enforcement agents. On a social media platform, DHS shared screenshots of an email from a Hilton address that stated immigration agents would not be permitted to stay at the hotel, leading to the cancellation of their bookings.
According to DHS, the cancellation occurred when officers attempted to reserve rooms using official government emails and rates. The agency criticized Hilton, claiming the hotel chain “maliciously CANCELLED” the reservations, thus obstructing law enforcement efforts regarding immigration laws.
Hilton and Local Operators Respond
In response to the backlash, both Hilton and the local management of the Hampton Inn Lakeville quickly released statements clarifying the matter. They emphasized that the messages sent to the agents did not align with their established policies. Hilton representatives noted that while the Hampton Inn locations are part of the Hilton brand, each property operates independently.
“We have been in direct contact with the hotel, and they have apologized for the actions of their team, which was not in keeping with their policies,” a Hilton spokesperson stated. The hotel operators, Everpeak Hospitality, also expressed regret over the incident. In their statement, they affirmed that the cancellation was inconsistent with their policy of being a welcoming environment for all guests.
Everpeak Hospitality further elaborated, stating, “We are in touch with the impacted guests to ensure they are accommodated. We do not discriminate against any individuals or agencies and apologize to those impacted.”
This situation highlights the tension surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States and the role of private businesses in such matters. As the hotel industry navigates its policies and public perception, this incident serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in balancing corporate values with regulatory compliance and social responsibility.
As of now, it remains to be seen how the actions taken by Hampton Inn Lakeville will influence the hotel’s relationship with law enforcement agencies in the future.
