A judge in Mexico has ordered former soccer player Omar Bravo to stand trial for allegations of abusing a teenage girl. The ruling was made on Friday, following Bravo’s arrest in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, on Sunday. The 45-year-old, who represented Mexico in the 2006 World Cup and participated in the 2004 Olympics, faces serious charges related to the alleged abuse of his girlfriend’s 17-year-old daughter over a span of six years.

If convicted, Bravo could serve a prison sentence ranging from five to ten years. Due to the gravity of the allegations, the judge mandated that Bravo must remain in pretrial detention for at least the next six months. In Mexico, such detention is imposed if the accused is deemed a danger to society or the ongoing legal process.

According to the victim’s lawyer, Juan Soltero, “For these types of crimes, due to their seriousness, the law provides these types of measures. Six months is a likely time limit because if the trial continues longer, he will have to spend more time in pretrial detention.” The defense presented a significant amount of evidence, including 42 screenshots of conversations between Bravo and the victim, as well as a video recording.

Bravo, known for his prolific career, played 66 matches for the Mexican national team and scored 15 goals. He retired in 2018 as the all-time leading scorer for Chivas, one of Mexico’s most popular soccer clubs.

The case has drawn considerable attention, not only due to Bravo’s status as a public figure but also because of the serious nature of the allegations. As the legal proceedings unfold, both the prosecution and defense will present their cases, focusing on the evidence provided and the implications of the charges.

As this situation develops, it highlights ongoing discussions about the protection of minors and the accountability of public figures in cases of alleged abuse. The legal process will now determine the outcome for Bravo and the impact on those involved.
