Family Embraces New Life in Asia, Cutting Costs by Half
A family from the UK has made a life-altering decision to relocate to Asia, significantly reducing their living expenses. Amelia Wray, aged 31, and her partner, Billy Evans, 37, felt constrained by their demanding work schedules and sought a more fulfilling lifestyle. After spending seven weeks in Thailand, they decided to leave their home in the UK, believing they could provide a better life for their three children, Archie, four, Annie, two, and Albert, one.
The couple’s journey began with a visit to Thailand in July 2023, where they aimed to test the waters for a potential permanent move. Falling in love with the culture and lifestyle, they swiftly put their five-bedroom home on the market. Thanks to a cash buyer, the sale was completed quickly, allowing them to fund their new life in Asia. The family departed from Heathrow Airport on November 4, 2023, ready for a fresh start.
Amelia and Billy plan to manage their expenses carefully, with a monthly budget of approximately £1,250, which includes £550 for accommodation. Back in the UK, their monthly expenditure reached around £2,500, equivalent to £83 per day. This drastic reduction in costs provides them with more quality time to spend with their children.
Amelia, a self-employed hairdresser, and Billy, who previously worked in telecommunications, were accumulating 108 hours of work each week between them. In their new environment, they are looking to gain new skills online while traveling. Amelia is retraining as a life coach, while Billy plans to explore entrepreneurial opportunities.
The family has embraced minimalism for their move, bringing only two rucksacks and two suitcases, while placing sentimental items in storage for £160 per month. Their children will participate in educational programs offered by “pop-up hubs” during their travels, although the family plans to home-educate them.
Their first stop in Thailand is Bangkok, where they intend to spend a week before heading to Chiang Mai in the north and later exploring the southern islands. Amelia noted that they aim to spend about three months in Thailand before moving on to other Southeast Asian destinations.
The reaction from friends and family has been mixed. While many have expressed support, some have questioned their decision to sell their home. Amelia stated, “Most people are supportive and are all for it. Of course, you get a handful of people who say, ‘are you crazy? Have you really thought about it?'”
In Bangkok, Amelia has been impressed by the city’s vibrancy. She remarked, “This city never sleeps – it’s incredible you can do what you want any time of day.” The family finds Thailand to be family-oriented and believes their children will thrive in this environment. The affordability of living in Thailand has allowed them to be more present and engaged with their children.
As they settle into their new life, the family has planned a visit to Hua Hin on November 26, 2023, for Christmas and New Year. Their approach to relocation is flexible, with no strict plans on where to go next, allowing them to “go with the flow” as they explore their surroundings.
The family’s budget allows for a weekly food shop costing £200, with additional expenses for utilities, outings, and recreation. They have managed to maintain a comfortable lifestyle while enjoying low-cost or free activities, such as visiting beaches, waterfalls, markets, and temples. Overall, they are excited about their new adventure and the opportunities it presents for both personal growth and family bonding.
