Swiss-Austrian filmmaker Edward Berger continues to make waves in the film industry with his latest project, Ballad of a Small Player. Following his success with the Oscar-nominated film All Quiet on the Western Front and the acclaimed Vatican drama Conclave, Berger is now exploring themes of abundance and self-discovery in his new Netflix adaptation of Lawrence Osborne’s novel.

The film, which stars Colin Farrell as Lord Doyle, a British aristocrat with a passion for gambling, had its world premiere at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival and has been well-received at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). With its upcoming screening at the San Sebastian Film Festival, Berger aims to captivate European audiences with a story steeped in excess and the search for inner peace.

Berger reflects on his recent career trajectory, stating, “If I look at All Quiet and Conclave, they brought about a world of abundance and luck and opportunities.” This notion resonates in the character of Lord Doyle, who, despite his lavish lifestyle filled with extravagant choices, ultimately seeks a “small haven of peace.”

The filmmaker describes Ballad of a Small Player as a “pop opera,” emphasizing the vibrant setting of Macau, which he portrays as an overwhelming and colorful backdrop. “Macau is so over the top, it’s so loud, it’s so colorful,” he notes, highlighting the visual language that drives the film’s narrative.

In discussing his connection to the project, Berger emphasizes the emotional depth of the story, which he believes transcends traditional plot-driven narratives. “This project isn’t defined by things like plot or action, but a journey of the soul of its main character,” he explains. The film captures the essence of a man grappling with his past and debts as he encounters Dao Ming, played by Fala Chen, who recognizes a kindred spirit in Doyle.

Berger’s collaboration with Farrell began in an unexpected setting—a sauna in London. Berger recalls their initial meeting at the BAFTAs, where he introduced the project to the actor. He acknowledges the significant role casting plays in filmmaking, stating, “It’s 90 percent of the movie.” Berger’s confidence in Farrell’s ability to portray Lord Doyle was pivotal, noting that if Farrell had declined, he might have had to reconsider the film’s viability.

As he prepares for the San Sebastian Film Festival, Berger expresses his appreciation for the festival circuit, describing it as essential for filmmakers. “Moviemaking is not made for us; it’s made for the audience,” he asserts. The festival serves as a platform for initial audience engagement, creating a ripple effect that can enhance a film’s visibility.

The director also reveals his upcoming project, The Riders, which stars Brad Pitt. The film is set in the 1980s and tells the story of a man searching for his missing wife while raising their daughter. “I’m shooting it in February,” he shares, indicating his continued momentum in the film industry.

With a string of successful projects and a commitment to exploring diverse narratives, Berger’s trajectory in cinema is undoubtedly one to watch. As the San Sebastian International Film Festival runs from September 19-27, audiences can look forward to his latest work and the thought-provoking themes it explores.
