Central African Opposition Leader Arrested Upon Return from Exile
A prominent critic of the Central African Republic’s (CAR) government, **Dominique Désiré Erenon**, was arrested on Friday at Bangui M’Poko International Airport shortly after returning from three years in exile. Erenon, the leader of the **March for Democracy and the People’s Salvation (MDSP)** party, had previously fled to **France** in 2020, citing safety concerns following his outspoken opposition to a constitutional reform that expanded presidential powers in 2016.
Erenon’s return coincided with a call from President **Faustin-Archange Touadéra** for Central Africans living abroad to come back to their homeland. Upon his arrival, Erenon was promptly detained, with authorities remaining silent about the reasons for his arrest and any formal charges against him. This lack of transparency has raised alarm among civil society groups, who view his detention as indicative of a broader trend of political repression in the lead-up to elections scheduled for **December 2023**.
The **Research and Investigation Section (SRI)** is currently questioning Erenon, and he is expected to be referred to the public prosecutor for further proceedings. His family is closely monitoring the situation and is contemplating legal representation, according to the French-language news outlet **RFI**.
Erenon, a former constitutional expert for the **African Union** and lecturer in public law at the **University of Bangui**, has been a vocal advocate for democratic reforms. He left CAR in 2020 after an alleged attempted abduction. His party stated that he returned to resume his teaching duties and to engage actively in national political discussions.
His detention occurs against a backdrop of increasing state control in the CAR, exacerbated by the presence of Russian-linked mercenaries supporting the government. Observers note that the timing of Erenon’s arrest raises concerns about the political climate as the country approaches pivotal elections.
In the context of CAR’s tumultuous political landscape, Erenon’s situation is seen not only as a personal crisis but also as a reflection of the ongoing struggles for democracy in a nation that has faced significant challenges in governance and civil rights.
