British PM Urges Former Prince Andrew to Testify in Epstein Inquiry
Pressure is mounting on former Prince Andrew to provide evidence to a U.S. congressional committee investigating the activities of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This follows comments from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who indicated that individuals with relevant information should cooperate with investigations. Starmer’s remarks were made during a press conference at the Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg, where he emphasized the importance of accountability.
While Starmer refrained from discussing the specifics of Andrew’s situation, he stated, “As a general principle, I have held for a very long time that anybody who has got relevant information in relation to these kinds of cases should give that evidence to those that need it.” His position underscores a broader expectation that individuals involved in sensitive matters should assist authorities.
Formerly known as Prince Andrew, now called Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has not responded to requests from the House Oversight Committee for a “transcribed interview.” This inquiry relates to his “long-standing friendship” with Epstein, which has drawn considerable scrutiny. In September 2022, Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and honors, a move aimed at distancing the royal family from criticism regarding his past associations.
The committee’s inquiry has continued to gain traction, with members expressing frustration over Andrew’s lack of cooperation. Rep. Robert Garcia of California and Rep. Suhas Subramanyam from Virginia stated, “Andrew continues to hide from serious questions.” They pledged that the investigation would proceed regardless, affirming their commitment to holding accountable anyone involved in Epstein’s crimes, regardless of their wealth or status.
Their statement, released on Friday, highlighted the determination of the committee to seek justice for the survivors of Epstein’s actions. “Our work will move forward with or without him,” they noted, emphasizing the importance of accountability in such serious matters.
As the situation develops, the pressure on Andrew to engage with the inquiry remains significant. The implications of his potential testimony could have lasting effects, not only for him personally but also for the royal family’s reputation. The ongoing investigation serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding high-profile figures and their connections to individuals involved in criminal activities.
