12-Year-Old Boy Dies After Shark Attack in Sydney Harbor
A 12-year-old boy, Nico Antic, tragically died after suffering severe injuries from a shark attack in Sydney Harbor. His family confirmed the news on January 20, 2024, following a battle for his life that began on January 18. Nico was swimming at a popular cliff-jumping venue known as Jump Rock, located near Shark Beach in the eastern Sydney suburb of Vaucluse.
In a heartfelt statement, his parents, Lorena and Juan Antic, expressed their profound grief. “We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico, has passed away,” they stated. They described him as a “happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit.” The family also extended their gratitude to first responders and medical staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital, as well as to the community for their support during this difficult time.
The attack occurred at approximately 16:20 local time when Nico jumped from a height of about 20 feet into the water. Witnesses reported that he suffered multiple injuries to both legs, which authorities believe were inflicted by a large shark. His three friends, who were with him, immediately jumped in to assist, pulling him to shore and calling for emergency help. He was subsequently transported to the hospital in critical condition, with local media reports indicating he had lost both legs.
The incident highlights a troubling rise in shark attacks along the Australian coastline. In the days surrounding Nico’s attack, four other incidents were reported, prompting the closure of dozens of beaches in the region. According to statistics from the Australian police, the country averages around 20 shark attacks annually, with fewer than three resulting in fatalities.
As of Saturday evening, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by a family friend had raised over $266,000 AUD to support the Antic family during this tragic time. The community has rallied behind the family, reflecting the outpouring of sympathy and support that has followed this unfortunate event.
The loss of young Nico Antic serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with ocean activities, even in well-frequented areas. As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, the family continues to mourn the loss of a beloved son and friend.
