Utah Schools Benefit from Record $111 Million Land Trust Allocation
Utah schools will receive a historic allocation of $111 million in land trust funds for the 2025-2026 academic year. This unprecedented amount is aimed at enhancing technological capabilities and improving educational outcomes across the state. The funding, distributed by the Trust Lands Administration (TLA), will be shared among public and charter schools, supporting more than 647,000 students in 1,019 schools.
The funds come from the School LAND Trust Program, which generates revenue through trust lands granted to Utah. The distribution of these funds is based on a per pupil formula, taking into account the academic needs of different schools as assessed by the School Community Councils, composed of parents, teachers, and school principals.
Supporting Educational Initiatives
Superintendent of the Salt Lake City School District, Elizabeth Grant, emphasized the importance of parental involvement in these councils. “Parent involvement is critical to our school community councils. That is where they have a voice on how we spend [School LAND Trust] funding to better serve our kids,” she said. According to Grant, collaboration among teachers, administrators, and families is essential for effective education.
On a recent visit to observe the impact of these trust funds, Grant was joined by Dr. Molly Hart, the Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Marlo Oaks, the Utah State Treasurer. Their tour highlighted how schools are utilizing these funds to support various initiatives, including reducing class sizes and improving technology access.
At Whittier Elementary School in Salt Lake City, allocated funds are being directed towards early intervention programs for early grades. Principal Dr. Vanessa Jordan stated, “It is so important that students access early literacy intervention. We know that early intervention in reading allows students entry to the skills needed to have choice and agency in their lives with careers and continued access to engaging curriculum.”
Funding Allocation and Impact
According to the Utah State Board of Education, the average funding per student across the state amounts to approximately $166. This investment signifies a commitment to enhancing educational quality and access in Utah’s schools. The School LAND Trust Program aims not only to improve academic performance but also to ensure that resources are equitably distributed based on the needs of each school.
More information on the School LAND Trust Program can be found on the TLA’s official website. The allocation of these funds represents a substantial investment in the future of education in Utah, fostering an environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential.
