USPS Urges Upstate New Yorkers to Clear Snow for Carrier Safety
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is calling on residents of Upstate New York to take action by clearing snow and ice from walkways, sidewalks, and mailbox approaches. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of mail carriers during the ongoing winter weather, which can create hazardous conditions for both carriers and the public.
With winter storms impacting the region, the USPS emphasizes that even a small amount of snow can pose significant risks. Clear paths around mailboxes enable carriers to maintain consistent delivery while minimizing their chances of slipping or sustaining injuries.
Guidelines for Snow Removal
To aid in safe mail delivery, the Postal Service has issued specific guidelines for residents. It is essential for curbside mailboxes to be adequately cleared to allow mail trucks to approach and depart without needing to reverse or requiring carriers to exit their vehicles.
Additionally, walkways should be kept free of snow and ice to provide proper traction and prevent accidents. Steps and handrails must also be maintained in good condition, free from ice and snow, to avert injuries to carriers. The USPS advises that overhangs should be cleared to reduce the risk of falling debris, which can pose dangers to both mail carriers and pedestrians.
Residents who have questions or comments regarding mail services can reach out to the USPS at 1-800-275-8777 or via the contact us link on USPS.com.
As Upstate New York braces for potential winter storms, preparation is key. Clear pathways not only promote safety for mail carriers but also ensure that mail delivery continues without interruption during challenging weather conditions.
