On March 25, 2024, Lania Stevens, a lieutenant with the Upper Darby Police Department, was honored with the Governor’s Keystone Award at a ceremony held in the newly refurbished Governors Mansion. This event marked the first public gathering at the mansion since it was damaged by an arson attack in April 2023. The award celebrates individuals and groups across Pennsylvania for their meaningful contributions to their communities.

Recognizing Community Impact

During the ceremony, Governor Josh Shapiro commended Stevens and seven other recipients for their dedication to making a difference in the lives of those around them. He emphasized the importance of community service, stating, “You’re the people who caught our eye along the way… and are making a real difference. You are the people inspiring fellow Pennsylvanians.”

The evening was emceed by former Philadelphia 76ers broadcaster Marc Zumoff, who highlighted Stevens’ role in bridging the gap between the police and the community. He remarked, “It is tough work building bridges between a community and its police force, but this woman does that, while at the same time making history.”

Stevens has broken significant barriers in her career. She is the first Black female lieutenant in the history of the Upper Darby Police Department and previously served as the first Black female sergeant and the first African American woman officer. In addition to her law enforcement duties, she serves as vice president of the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County and mentors local youth through the department’s programs.

A Symbol of Progress and Commitment

Governor Shapiro expressed pride in holding the award ceremony at the Governors Mansion, referring to it as “the people’s house.” He reflected on the legacy of William Penn, who envisioned the mansion as a place of free expression and community engagement. “You are the builders who do this every day,” Shapiro noted, recognizing the efforts of individuals like Stevens.

Stevens was joined at the event by Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown, Chief Administrative Officer Crandall Jones, and Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt. Mayor Brown expressed his pride in Stevens’ achievements, noting that she is one of only 17 individuals statewide to receive the Keystone Award. “It recognizes individuals who make a significant difference in their communities,” he remarked, highlighting Stevens’ leadership in the Teens and Police Service (TAPS Program).

Superintendent Bernhardt affirmed Stevens’ contributions, stating, “I couldn’t be prouder of the men and women who serve this community every day. Our officers are the best in law enforcement.” He added that Stevens’ recognition reflects her commitment to the community and the high standards maintained by the entire department.

The Keystone Award serves not only as a personal accolade for Stevens but also as a testament to the broader efforts of the Upper Darby Police Department in fostering positive relationships within the community. This recognition reinforces the importance of community-oriented policing and the vital role that officers like Stevens play in creating a more just society.
