U.S. Launches $5 Million Initiative to Enhance Wildfire Response
The United States Department of the Interior has allocated $5 million to support a pilot program aimed at enhancing wildfire response capabilities among local emergency agencies. This funding, announced on March 5, 2024, will assist 97 local response agencies across 26 states in acquiring wildfire-grade water tankers through the Slip-on Tanker pilot program.
This initiative enables local governments with populations under 50,000 to purchase tanker units that can convert existing trucks and other vehicles into wildland fire engines. The goal is to improve operational capacity without necessitating the purchase of new firefighting engines, thereby optimizing resources for emergency responders.
Program Background and Funding History
Launched in February 2024 under the Biden administration, the Slip-on Tanker program is part of a broader effort under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Initial funding of $1.3 million was provided in September 2024, with an additional $20 million earmarked for local governments in 2025. The program has received continuity support from the Trump administration, reflecting bipartisan commitment to wildfire response.
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum emphasized the importance of the program, stating, “President Trump knows local firefighting agencies are often the first to respond when a wildfire ignites and took strong action to ensure they had the funding needed to get the job done for the American people.” This initiative is designed to equip local departments with practical tools to enhance their efficiency and responsiveness in the face of wildfires.
Local agencies will soon receive information about new grant opportunities to further support their firefighting efforts. The Department of the Interior’s commitment to strengthening local emergency responses underscores the critical role these agencies play in protecting communities from the escalating threat of wildfires.
The Slip-on Tanker program not only represents a strategic investment in emergency preparedness but also reflects a growing recognition of the challenges posed by wildfires, which have become increasingly frequent and severe in recent years.
For more details about the specific agencies awarded funding, a complete list is available through the Department of the Interior’s official channels. As funding continues to roll out, the hope is that local response capacity will significantly improve, ultimately safeguarding both people and properties from the devastating impacts of wildfires.
