Texans Enjoy Tax-Free Shopping for Back-to-School Supplies
Texans can take advantage of a tax-free weekend designed to ease the financial strain of back-to-school shopping. From August 8 through August 10, 2025, shoppers in Texas will be able to purchase select clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks without incurring state and local sales taxes, provided each item costs less than $100. This initiative, announced by the City of Arlington, aims to support families and stimulate local businesses during this shopping period.
This tax exemption applies not only to in-store purchases but also to online and catalog sales directed at Texas consumers. By allowing families to stock up on essential items without the burden of sales tax, the program encourages increased spending. However, it is crucial for shoppers to note that only purchases made during the designated dates are eligible for tax exemption. Any items bought before August 8 or after August 10 will be subject to standard sales tax rates.
Eligible Items and Shopping Guidelines
The list of items eligible for tax exemption includes a variety of essentials. Specifically, shoppers can purchase clothing, face masks, footwear, and basic school supplies like pens, pencils, and notebooks without paying taxes. Additionally, backpacks designed for elementary and secondary school students will also be exempt during this period.
For those opting to shop online, it is important to ensure that purchases are made correctly to benefit from the tax break. If a shopper completes a transaction by entering their credit card information at 17:00 on the last day of the tax holiday, the purchase will still qualify for the exemption, even if delivery occurs afterward. Conversely, the City of Arlington emphasizes that if a credit card transaction fails at 23:00 on August 10 and the payment is not resubmitted until August 11, the purchase will be taxable.
In summary, the tax-free weekend presents a significant opportunity for Texans to save on necessary back-to-school items. Families are encouraged to take advantage of this limited-time offer while keeping in mind the specific guidelines to ensure their purchases qualify for the exemption.
