Sumter County Intermediate School Launches Innovative STEM Class
Sumter County Intermediate School in Sumter County, South Carolina, has officially launched its new STEM connections class, designed to engage students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Under the guidance of Deavios Barron, the initiative aims to inspire young minds to think creatively and practically about the world of STEM.
Barron, who has previously led a successful STEM Day for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, envisions this class as an opportunity to shift the focus from traditional textbook learning to hands-on exploration. “My vision for this class is to transform ‘what if’ into ‘how,’” Barron stated. “I want to encourage my students to become young scientists and engineers, using projects that allow them to explore, experiment, and discover.”
The new class will feature Maker Space carts that are equipped with various tools and technology, providing students with the resources to create craft supplies and engage in experimentation. Barron emphasized the importance of a learning environment that values the process of problem-solving. “In our STEM lab, we celebrate ‘productive struggle,’” he explained. “It’s not just about getting the right answer; it’s about the grit and determination it takes to find a solution.”
Barron aims to instill in his students the understanding that setbacks in projects are not failures but rather invitations to find alternative approaches. This philosophy is intended to cultivate resilience and perseverance, essential skills for future success in any field.
As the school community embraces this innovative program, students at Sumter County Intermediate School are poised to benefit from an enriching educational experience that prepares them for the challenges of the modern world. The introduction of the STEM connections class marks a significant step forward in enhancing the school’s educational offerings, fostering a new generation of critical thinkers and innovators.
