Safeway to Close Loveland Store as Part of 10 Location Shutdowns

The Safeway grocery store located at 860 N. Cleveland Ave. in Loveland, Colorado, is set to close this fall as part of a broader initiative affecting multiple locations across the state. Officials confirmed that the closure will take place no later than November 7, 2023, following a notice received under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

Kimberly Overholt, a representative from the city’s Communication and Engagement office, stated that the city was notified of the impending closure but did not disclose how many employees would be affected. Safeway representatives have yet to respond to inquiries regarding the decision.

According to reports from KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs, a total of 10 Safeway locations are slated for closure across Colorado, Nebraska, and New Mexico, including another store in Fort Collins. The company has indicated that these closures are part of a strategic consolidation that merges its Intermountain and Denver divisions into a newly formed Mountain West Division, which it describes as a “growth accelerator.”

The WARN Act mandates that companies with 100 or more employees provide at least 60 days’ notice before conducting plant closings or mass layoffs. This regulation aims to give workers and local communities time to prepare for job losses, allowing them to seek alternative employment or training opportunities.

Following the closure of the North Cleveland store, Safeway will still operate two other locations in Loveland at 1451 W. Eisenhower Blvd. and 2321 W. Eisenhower Blvd.. As this situation develops, further updates will be provided to keep the community informed.
