Port Coquitlam Defends Public Lands Amid First Nation Claim

The City of Port Coquitlam has reaffirmed its commitment to defending public ownership of municipal land, responding to a suspended claim from the Kwikwetlem First Nation. The city issued its position in a social media statement, addressing concerns stemming from a claim that originated in 2016, which identified certain properties owned by the province, Metro Vancouver, and the city itself.

Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West emphasized the importance of transparency during a time of heightened scrutiny regarding land claims. “We’ve had the Richmond-Cowichan decision, which has generated a number of inquiries to the city from residents about the status of the claim in Port Coquitlam,” he stated. He noted the diminished local media coverage following the loss of community newspapers, which previously provided regular updates on council meetings and related issues.

In August 2023, a ruling from the B.C. Supreme Court granted the Cowichan Tribes rights to approximately eight kilometres of land along the Fraser River in Richmond. The court’s decision invalidated Crown and city land titles in that area, creating uncertainty for nearly 150 private property owners and raising questions about the future of fee simple land ownership throughout British Columbia.

Port Coquitlam’s Proactive Approach

The city’s recent statement aimed to clarify that the 2016 land claim does not affect private property, a question frequently raised by concerned residents. “We thought it was important to be proactive and transparent and to provide residents with an update on the status of the land claim,” West explained. He reiterated the city’s commitment to monitor the Cowichan land claim proceedings and any related developments closely.

West reassured residents that the city will take measures to protect both public and private property rights within its jurisdiction. The administration aims to maintain a clear line of communication with the community during this evolving situation.

As the implications of the Cowichan Tribes’ claim unfold, Port Coquitlam remains vigilant in safeguarding its lands and addressing the concerns of its residents. The city’s proactive stance reflects an effort to ensure public awareness and confidence amid changing legal landscapes regarding land ownership in British Columbia.
