Patriots Prepare for Commanders in Anticipated Joint Practice

The New England Patriots are gearing up for a significant moment in their training camp as they prepare to welcome the Washington Commanders for a joint practice on August 16, 2023. Head coach Mike Vrabel opted for a lighter approach on August 15, allowing players to participate in a walkthrough at Gillette Stadium, following an intense padded practice that lasted over two hours the previous day.
This joint practice represents an opportunity for both teams to intensify their preparations ahead of the upcoming preseason opener on August 18. With excitement building, players are eager to engage with opponents outside their squad. Defensive back Kyle Dugger expressed enthusiasm, stating, “It’s going to be really good for us. Really good to compete against someone else and see different things we haven’t seen yet.” He emphasized that this practice would be a valuable chance to refine their skills.
Attendance and Injury Updates
The Patriots’ roster saw some notable absences during Tuesday’s walkthrough. Cornerback Marcellas Dial joined teammate Christian Gonzalez on the Did Not Participate (DNP) list after suffering a leg injury that required him to be carted off during Monday’s practice. Additionally, linebackers K’Lavon Chaisson and Jahlani Tavai spent their time on a lower conditioning field, while defensive lineman Jacquelin Roy was also absent.
On the offensive side, linemen Morgan Moses and Sidy Sow were seen on the lower field, and tight end Tyler Davis did not make an appearance. Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne missed his second consecutive practice due to an injury sustained the previous Friday and is not expected to participate for the remainder of the week.
Position Battles Intensify
Defensive depth continues to evolve as veteran cornerback Carlton Davis, who has participated in walkthroughs but missed padded practices, lined up as one of the team’s top corners on Tuesday. DJ James, who has been making strides on the depth chart, lined up opposite Davis, showcasing his potential through competitive drills. Receiver Kayshon Boutte praised James, stating, “DJ has done a tremendous job stepping up filling in that role.”
Meanwhile, receiver Javon Baker has been getting valuable first-team reps alongside Boutte and others. Baker’s performance has been commendable, particularly following a solid practice on Monday, indicating he is pushing for a more significant role in the offense as they prepare for the Commanders.
Vederian Lowe also saw action at right tackle during this practice. With Moses on the conditioning field, rookie tackle Marcus Bryant was given significant opportunities at the position. The Patriots will need to develop depth on the offensive line as they approach the preseason.
The return of defensive coordinator Terrell Williams added to the team’s momentum following his absence from Monday’s practice due to dehydration. His presence will be crucial as the Patriots prepare to face the Commanders.
As excitement builds for the joint practice, both teams are eager to demonstrate their progress and sharpen their skills. The Patriots are set to take the field with the Commanders at approximately 10:15 a.m. on August 16, where both coaching staffs will aim to maximize the experience for their players.
