NYC Mayor Mamdani Opposes U.S. Military Action Against Maduro
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly opposed the United States military’s operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The mayor conveyed his disapproval directly to President Donald Trump during a phone call on March 23, 2024, following a briefing about Maduro’s capture and his impending prosecution in New York for narco-terrorism charges.
During a press conference in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Mamdani explained that his opposition stemmed from concerns about regime change and violations of both federal and international law. “I called the president and spoke with him directly to register my opposition to this act,” Mamdani stated, emphasizing the need for consistent adherence to international law. He did not disclose Trump’s response to his concerns, stating, “I registered my opposition. I made it clear and we left it at that.”
Mayor’s Detailed Statement on Military Operation
In a more detailed statement posted on X, Mamdani elaborated on his stance against the U.S. military’s unilateral actions. He described the operation as “an act of war and a violation of federal and international law.” He highlighted that such aggressive actions not only impact Venezuela but also have direct repercussions for the Venezuelan community in New York City, which numbers in the tens of thousands.
“My focus is their safety and the safety of every New Yorker,” Mamdani stated, committing to monitor the situation closely and provide relevant updates. His remarks reflect a broader concern for the implications of foreign policy decisions on local communities.
Context of Relationship with Trump
Mamdani’s relationship with Trump has evolved since their initial interactions. Their cordial meeting in the Oval Office came shortly after Mamdani’s election, marking a notable shift from their contentious campaign exchanges. During the campaign, Trump labeled Mamdani a “communist,” while Mamdani referred to Trump as a “despot.”
Despite these past conflicts, the recent phone call indicates a willingness to engage in dialogue on pressing issues, including public safety and housing affordability for New Yorkers.
As Mamdani embarks on his tenure as mayor, his firm stance on international matters like the military operation in Venezuela underscores his commitment to safeguarding the interests of New York City’s diverse population. The implications of U.S. foreign policy decisions will continue to influence local dynamics, particularly in a city with a significant Venezuelan diaspora.
