The absence of Lucas Bravo as Gabriel in the latest season of Emily in Paris has sparked conversation among fans and critics alike. Despite his limited screen time, show creator Darren Star emphasized that the fifth season features “the right amount” of Gabriel, aligning with the overall narrative direction.

In an interview with Decider on December 19, 2024, Star clarified that Bravo was not consulted regarding his character’s reduced presence. “He really wasn’t consulted, and he just chose to come back to the show,” Star stated. He explained that the storyline did not center on Emily and Gabriel this season. “The storyline wasn’t about Emily and Gabriel. At the same time, it was great to have him and keep him in the world of the show,” he added.

Season 5, which began streaming on December 18, 2024, features Gabriel briefly visiting Rome and then returning to Paris. He ultimately accepts a job opportunity that takes him away but appears to reflect on his past with Emily before departing again. Andrew Fleming, director and executive producer, affirmed that Bravo’s absence was due to other commitments, specifically a film project. “We worked around that,” he noted, emphasizing that Bravo was never leaving the show permanently.

In the season finale, Gabriel writes a letter to Emily, inviting her to visit him in Greece. This cliffhanger leaves viewers questioning the future of their relationship. Fleming highlighted Gabriel’s importance to the series, stating, “He’s part of the DNA of the show. When he and Emily are in a scene together, something undefinable happens.”

Bravo’s limited appearances follow his prior comments about Gabriel’s character development. In October 2024, he expressed frustration about the trajectory of his role, saying, “The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in season 1, and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes.” He criticized the character’s evolution, suggesting that Gabriel’s persona became less engaging as he transformed into a “melancholic, sad, depressed” character.

“I’ve never been so far away from him,” Bravo admitted, explaining that he struggled to bring nuance to the character while adhering to the script. “There is only so much I can do in the limits of a script,” he explained, voicing concerns about the creative restrictions on set.

Despite these challenges, sources indicated before the season premiered that Bravo would still be part of the show, albeit in a less prominent role. “Lucas is in the show; he’s just organically not as big a story this season,” a source shared.

As the series progresses, viewers remain eager to see how Bravo’s character will evolve and whether he will return to the fun, spirited role that initially captivated audiences. The complex dynamics between Gabriel and Emily continue to be a focal point, leaving fans speculating about their future together in the upcoming seasons.
