LAPD Officer-Involved Shootings Increase Amid Rising Violence

Reports indicate that shootings involving officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have significantly increased in 2025. As of December 8, there have been 43 shootings by officers, with 33 suspects struck by gunfire. This marks a notable rise compared to the 26 shootings recorded during the same period last year.

The increase in officer-involved shootings is accompanied by a rise in the violence that law enforcement personnel face. The LAPD reported that 18 of the shootings involved suspects armed with firearms, up from 12 in 2024. Additionally, there were nine incidents where suspects used imitation or replica guns, compared to just four last year. Moreover, suspects armed with knives or other edged weapons have also increased, reflecting a growing trend in the nature of confrontations.

The department noted a disturbing trend in assaults against officers, with 12 incidents reported this year where officers were fired upon, an increase from seven in 2024. The increase in violence has led to more serious charges against suspects; six individuals have been charged with attempted murder of a police officer in 2025, compared to four last year. Additionally, fifteen suspects have faced charges for assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, a significant jump from the seven charges filed during the same timeframe in 2024.

Increased Violence and Department Response

The LAPD’s preliminary analysis indicates that the encounters officers face this year are more violent and dangerous. In response, the department emphasizes its commitment to thorough reviews of each shooting incident. These reviews include internal evaluations and independent oversight to ensure compliance with legal standards and departmental policies.

Officers undergo rigorous training focusing on de-escalation techniques and tactical decision-making aimed at safely resolving critical incidents. The department operates under the guiding principle of “Reverence for Human Life,” instructing officers to utilize all available options when confronting violent individuals. They have the ability to request specialized assistance, including the involvement of mental health professionals when necessary.

The LAPD aims to provide transparency regarding officer-involved shootings. Preliminary information about each incident is made available through their official website, lapdonline.org, and on their YouTube channel, @LAPDHQ, via “Critical Incident Community Briefings.”

As the year progresses, the LAPD continues to address the challenges posed by increasing violence, both in terms of the actions of suspects and the safety of its officers.
